“We must learn to think and act ecologically. We repent of extravagance, pollution and wanton destruction. We recognize that human beings find it easier to subdue the earth than they do to subdue themselves.” ~ John Stott
New research from the University of British Columbia shows just how bad seagull diets in the Northwest have become.
Louise Blight analyzed hundreds of seagull feathers stored in museums around Washington and British Columbia over the past 150 years.
She found a decline in heavier carbon and nitrogen isotopes in the feathers.
That indicates that the birds shifted their diet from fish to french fries and other garbage.
And it’s having an effect: Seagull egg size has shrunk in recent decades, as has their number of offspring.
SOUND FAMILIAR?
Like seagulls, many children today are born with nutrient deficiencies and excessive levels of toxic metals and a lot of it has to do with poor post-natal nutrition which adds to the deficiencies.
DIET
As the UBC research indicates, eating the wrong foods has a serious effect on the seagulls' offspring. Many are not surviving due to their sizes.
For children it is no different. Feeding your child any kind of processed foods, pasteurized dairy products, formulas, fruits, etc... causes the child to be in burnout and clinging more on the mother for some form of protection. Many children today are also born with different diseases.
Whereas some children may look healthy at birth, most are not, as many find themselves in some sort of health crises, just like the gulls offspring.
STEWARDSHIP
Most of us instinctively know that we are the stewardship of all creation on earth. We are not to act selfishly but with great authoritative-yet-responsible mentality. Our creator has given us great honor in this position. He has entrusted us as stewards with His creation, as we work, care for and rule over it.
It appears that we have not been able to resist the urge to serve our individual needs rather than looking after our children, the earth, etc... This may be due to the fact that we are bombarded with messages and advertisements telling us to make life easier and more convenient, and our own selfishness and burnout tendencies tell us “no one else is doing it” and “my contribution really won’t make a difference.”
We may know that we have been given dominion over creation, but often we do not pause to consider what this means because like my elder friend says to me often, “the elevator does not always go up”! Most of us are so very toxic, that our brains, unfortunately, is not functioning to its optimal, as it should.
THE BIG PICTURE
"Seagulls' are an indicator of our coastal marine ecosystems," Blight says. “We need to be restoring ecosystems along the coast, and that includes restoring fish populations.”
Consider that not because it is written "organic" on a package means it is healthy. I made the same mistake with my health. In fact, I was very arrogant, thinking I had a better diet than anyone because my mom cooked food from scratch. You can read more Here.
Learn to read the labels and do not give your child foods that will cause him or her health issues in his early or later life. Stick to your convictions and do not give in to what the child says he or she wants. Children do not always know what is best for them. This is the job of the parent (man mostly) to guide and lead its family, not the other way around, as it is the trend today for the mother to do all the work and do the tough decisions.
Finally, ask yourself whether you are prepared to give up "what you want" and see what happens in your own little world. Doing small steps everyday to better ourselves and better the lives of our children and everything we are given stewardship over can indeed make a world of difference.
"Inch by inch is a cinch"! in all cases for everyone involved. It start in our own backyard, with our own families!
Until next time,
Your faithful servant,
